What got changed for bm spec in Cataclysm?

There is no big difference from what we had at the end of Wrath of the Lich King in terms of pvp as beastmasters. You can still just use arcane shot and kill command and nothing else..
However without good gear this spec is useless since other classes improved since the last expansion. With some fancy gear bm is very powerful, higher burst than marksman or survival but lower damage in a longer fight, better mobility tough.

What talent build to use?
Here is the picture with what talent build you should use.

Talent Spec Updated 2 June 2011

BM hunter talent build cataclysm

Some players are using survival talents instead of the ones from marksman but they will lose dmg from the pet with the focus regen. Most of serious arena players are using this talent build.
Focus Fire is pretty useless. #update, search for the focus fire post.

Best stats for bm hunters
The stats you should aim are Agility > Mastery > Crit > Haste.
Haste doesn’t scale atm, the pet won’t receive any important attack speed boost from your high haste, he also not receiving crit chance, but is getting dmg from mastery.
You should aim for Agility obviously, and after stack mastery and crit keeping a balance between them.
Try to get the Tol Barad trinket > Unsolvable Riddle (combined with bestial wrath and all the cooldowns will increase the burst considerably).

PvP rotation and shot priority
Start with serpent sting > kill command > arcane shot spam > cobra shot to regen focus and keep an eye on kc cooldown and use it every time is out of cooldown.
It does the most damage.
Don’t bother with steady shot, you get no benefit as beastmaster and cobra shot does more dmg. Use tranq shot on shielded players to dispel their shield (with luck) as it will cancel one buff, could be the shield or something else.
Use bestial wrath and all the cooldowns as soon they are ready and a good choice is when you have enough focus to sustain a good burst. Also to cancel a cc, snare.

Bm spec macros “updated”
#bestial wrath

/cast Bestial Wrath
/cast Intimidation
/cast Rapid Fire
/use Unsolvable Riddle
/cast Rabid
/cast Call of the Wild
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear();

Add /cast Ancient Hysteria if you use a Core hound

#kc + healing from spirit beast (if you have one)

/use Bloodthirsty Gladiator’s Chain Gauntlets (if you have engineering)
/cast Kill Command
/target [your char name]
/cast Spirit Mend
/cleartarget
/targetlastenemy
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear();

#rapid fire & trinket

/cast Rapid Fire
/use Unsolvable Riddle
/use Unsolvable Riddle
/use Unsolvable Riddle
/cast Roar of Recovery

It is correct with 3 x /use, since only one will not work all the time.

#help the pet

/petpassive
/cast Mend Pet
/cast Cower
/cast Last Stand
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear();

The best pets for beastmaster hunters
Here is a list of what you should use:
Spirit Beasts – have a not neglectable healing for you and agility buff
Core Hounds – Ancient Hysteria (works like heroism) and reducing casting speed on the enemy
Devilsaur – -10% healing debuff for the enemy, good vs healer + dpsers or in a high burst combo with enh shamans or others.

Try to get a spirit beast for battlegrounds. The bear from Grizzly Hills is the easiest to get as it has only one spawning point.

What glyphs to use, enchants and gems?
For glyphs this is the optimal choice, see the picture.

Beastmaster glyphs

#update
Here are the glyphs:
- Kill shot (to be able to shot twice when KS is active)
- Arcane Shot (will increase arcane shots dmg)
- Glyph of Kill command (reducing focus for KC)
- some players are using Rapid Fire glyph instead of KC. Depends, in arena in 2v2 for a burst cleave, rapid fire can be better.

- Bestial Wrath
- Disengage
- Raptor Strike (very useful if you can hit with Raptor Strike, it will reduce your dmg taken by 20% for 5 seconds)
- or glyph of Master’s Call instead of Raptor Strike. However Raptor Strike is the optimal choice.

Enchants are the same go for the stats written here, get the high end enchants for your epic set.
Gems, the same, +40 agility for red ones, +20ag+20crit for yellow, ignore blues if they give 10ag and go for +40agility, keep one for the meta gem who should be 54 mastery and minor running speed increase or the crit + crit % bonus if you are going for blue spell penetration. Mainly for world pvp or just battlegrounds you won’t need spell penetration.

i just ask, cuz i play my bm with full sic’em and one point in improved hawk/fox.

maybe in 4.0.6 the AP from hawk are usefull, as KC scales better on AP on 4.0.6

Wow, that was fast….. thanks for the updates Chris! Do you have a suggested pet build to go along with this? I am currently running with the Spirit Leopard.

    Wrong statements:
    - Pets DO inherits +crit from their master, making the best choice to go AGI > CRIT > MASTERY > HASTE
    - Final Talents template depends on the comp you are running. If your mates count on your cc, you’ll have to drop MM talents for survival ones (trap resist + entrapment)
    - Killing Streak is not enough attractive compared to ” improve mend pet” which is mandatory and has to be cast in a preventive way to ensure that your pet is ALWAYS on its target (pets are quiet easily kitted in 3vs3 mostly)

    My two cents :)

I don’t really agree with this build. Improved mend pet is mandatory for any kind of PvP, even one point on it. Also I don’t know how useful killing streak is but I always find myself leaving it out of my choices.

Then, I can’t pvp without entrapment. It is an amazing tool for kiting and peeling your teammates, adding a nice defensive weapon in your arsenal. Otherwise your teammates will have to babysit you a lot in order to do your job.

In a nutshell, I would drop Killing streak for a point in Improved Mend pet and one in focus fire, or two points in Improved mend pet. I would also drop all points in MM in order to go down to Entrapment and Survival tactics since I believe that surviving is much more important than bursting mindlessly (if you survive you can burst, but the opposite is not possible).

I am also not sold for Glyph of Raptor strike over Glyph of master call. I use a macro:
    /stopcasting
    /cast Master’s Call
    /cast Wing clip

Which is the only melee ability that I would like to use when someone is near me. If i get to raptor strike also, then something’s wrong.

That talent spec from the guide was pretty outdated, I uploaded a new one.

You can either take 2 points from mm and put them into entrapment. In arena at least, freezing trap is more useful.

I’m not sure why would you want mend pet as I haven’t seen any hunters with it. It has 25% to cleanse a poison, debuff, etc.

For the glyph, there are 3 choices, concussive (got fixed in 4.1), raptor strike or mc.

You need improved mend pet because you want your pet to stick to the target. Given the popularity of mages and in general spammable snare, Mend pet+Petattack would be amazing for keeping the pet on the target.

Also, the focus on pets is bugged since 4.0.6, and you will notice that sometimes the focus goes back to 100% randomly (this happens a lot). This makes the tier 1 MM talents useless, apart from the Efficiency one. The choice of glyphs for arena players is pretty standard as far as I have seen and I completely agree with:
Prime: Arcane, Kill shot, Kill Command
Major: Bestial Wrath, Master’s call, Disengage
Minor: Feign Death, Scare beast, Revive pet.

It goes without saying that BM needs the spirit beast for obvious reasons. The healing ability is just amazing.

I would also suggest that you use some focus Scatters+Intimidation for PvP. A very nice way of doing so without needing additional keybinds is:

    /cast [target=focus,exists] Scatter Shot;Scatter Shot

This will scatter your focus or your target (if focus does not exist). It has been very useful for me on arena and pvp in general.

Seems that bestial discipline is useless, I tried on the dummy and the pet is never out of focus and the focus reseting to 100% once a few seconds. There is a topic on arena junkies on the hunter section about this.
Improved mend pet is really lame that is designed just to remove novas and roots, 25% is not enough.
Killing streak is crap. So 1 point needs to be sacrificed into bestial discipline.

If you get 2 points on the Improved Mend pet, you get a 50% chance to remove 1 Curse, Disease, Magic or Poison effect from the pet each tick. And there are 9 ticks per mend pet. It’s not lame at all especially if you want the pet to follow a mage, warlock or Resto druid. Plus it heals it for a good amount of HP back.

If you are 3/3 on Bestial Discipline (30% regeneration) you will be amazed on how quick you get your focus up and running.
